Pedestrian Accident
In Arizona, pedestrian involved accidents have increased as the population has gone up. Some of the most harrowing accidents are those when a pedestrian is hit by a motor vehicle; pedestrians are completely blindsided and have nothing to physically protect them from the impact. However, because of the rise in pedestrian accidents, Arizona has stepped up its effort in reducing and preventing these accidents. For example, Arizona implemented a program, called High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK), that helps reduce pedestrian accidents near Valley schools, major street crossings, and busy downtown areas. Sadly, most pedestrian accidents continue to take place mid block, which is outside the safety offered by HAWK.
Often motorists are simply not paying attention to the road, resulting in major injury or death of a pedestrian. Pedestrians are usually struck by motorists that fail to:
- Yield to the right-of-way
- Stop at a cross walk
- Come to a complete stop at a stop sign
- Follow the posted speed limit in neighborhood streets and driveways
- Stop before turning right at a red light
At times pedestrians are responsible for the accident – pedestrians must remember to follow all traffic-control signals and obey traffic lights, as they are subject to the same regulations as motorists. However, more often than not the motorist is at fault, leaving the pedestrian to deal with mounds of medical bills, worrying about returning to work, and unable to partake in the everyday activities they enjoy.
